The simple answer is yes, the Gozney Roccbox can absolutely be used in the rain, due to its weather resistant design and the high-quality materials used to build it.

But that doesn’t mean you can just fire up your Roccbox in the pouring rain like it’s a normal day. You’ll also need to pay special attention that rain doesn’t blow into the oven body, which risks damaging the baking stone.

The Gozney Roccbox is one of the most recognized pizza ovens on the market today. The Roccbox is a fully featured pizza oven, meaning it can reach temperatures much higher than a regular home oven—up to 950F. The Roccbox is known for its extra thick layer of insulation that retains heat and allows for consistent results whether you’re cooking 1 pizza for yourself or 10 in a row for family and friends.

Of course, if you want to maintain this performance and consistency, you need to keep a few things in mind when using it in less than ideal conditions, including rainy weather.

Cold Weather and Winter Use

The Roccbox is a resilient little machine, capable of performing even in adverse weather conditions like rain and snow. But, if the weather is bitterly cold, I recommend starting with a low flame to prevent thermal shock to the stone. In fact, this is exactly what Gozney recommends doing in extremely cold temperatures. 

Protective Measures for the Roccbox

While the Roccbox is designed to withstand the elements, it’s important to protect it from prolonged exposure to moisture. Gozney has designed a Roccbox Cover specifically for this purpose, providing an added layer of protection against the elements.

If you’re going to be storing your Roccbox outside, some kind of covering is an absolute must if you want to avoid rust build up or cracking the baking stone. It doesn’t have to be the official Roccbox Cover, but it helps if the covering you’re using completely seals the body of the oven away from the elements.

Of course, the easier and better solution is to bring your Roccbox inside when not in use, assuming you have the space for it.

Can you use Gozney Roccbox in the Rain? Things to Remember 

First off, let’s make a few things clear. While the outside of the Roccbox is perfectly weather resistant and capable of withstanding rain, the inside of the oven, especially the baking stone, is not. If the stone starts getting wet while the flame is going and heat is being generated, you run a real risk of cracking the stone.

So if you’re considering using your Roccbox in the rain, you ideally want the rain to be pouring straight down rather than blowing sideways into the mouth of the oven and onto the stone. 

This is why I recommend setting up your Roccbox under a well ventilated canopy or similar overhead cover. This will not only protect the inside of the oven but also keep you dry while you cook. 

However, ensure there’s sufficient ventilation for the smoke to escape. Never use the Roccbox in a garage or any other enclosed space unless you fully understand proper ventilation and the dangers of smoke and carbon monoxide buildup.

Just to reiterate from before, it’s not so much about rain as it is the direction of the rain. So, while an umbrella might be a good solution in some circumstances, if the rain is driving sideways right under it and into the body of the Roccbox, it’s no better than using it without one.

Generally speaking, if you have to use the Roccbox in the rain, I recommend only doing it in a light drizzle. If it’s raining harder, just make sure there’s no wind, or place the oven in such a way that rain isn’t blowing into the body and onto the stone. We’re really trying to protect the stone here more so than the Roccbox itself.
